Turning 18: Rights & Responsibilities that Come with Coming of Age (and Going to College or Work)

- What are the 50 things that a teen can do legally, upon turning 18?
- What can a teen be held legally responsible for, upon turning 18?
- What legal permission should teens set up, so that their parents can help them in case of injury, illness?
- How can parents and teens best set up teens for financial stability and success?
- What should families make sure a teen knows, or knows how to do, before leaving for college?
Our speaker, Kathleen Gordon is the Associate Director of the Clinical Program at American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL) and has served as an adjunct professor at AUWCL and at George Mason Law School. A member of the District of Columbia and California Bars, she is a good example of what to do if you get all the way through law school and realize you don’t want to practice law after all. Prof. Gordon has previously worked for the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, and the late Hon. Rudi M. Brewster, U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of California. Prof. Gordon holds a B.A., magna cum laude, in Religion from Davidson College and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. She has two teenage children, whose names are omitted to protect the innocent.
